How does Woebot for Adolescents work?

Woebot starts a conversation by asking your teen how they’re feeling and, based on what they share, Woebot will suggest tools and content to help them identify and manage their thoughts and emotions and offer techniques they can try to help them feel better.

Woebot’s conversations are written by conversational writers using elements from evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, along with collaboration from our clinical experts.

How often should teens use the app?

Your teen can chat with Woebot as often as they’d like – whether in specific moments and/or as part of their daily self-care practice. Woebot is available day or night, 24/7. Just open the app whenever you want to chat with Woebot.

Becoming familiar with Woebot can help your teen start applying what they’re learning in their everyday life right away. Based on our experience to date, we recommend:

  • First 3 days – at least once a week
  • On-going – at least once a week
  • Per session – at least 3-5 minutes, though there is no time limit

What if my teen is in crisis?

Woebot for Adolescents is not a crisis service. It is equipped with a Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm that flags language that may be concerning in user free-text input. Upon recognition, Woebot will ask the user if they would like to be provided with a list of resources that includes emergency contact phone numbers and suicide crisis hotline contact information. Woebot then offers tools to assist in addressing upsetting emotions and thoughts.

The list of resources is also immediately available at any time from the “Tools” menu.

Is my teen's data encrypted?

Yes. All of their data is encrypted both in transit and at rest with 256-bit encryption or higher. We also follow procedures required by HIPAA for the anonymization and transmission of their data.
